Drawing as a practice of resistance

New perspectives to (re)consider contemporary geography

with Giuseppe Stampone, Tiziana Pers and Daniele Capra

Festival vicino/lontano – Premio Terzani

Sunday 13 May 3 pm

Chiesa di San Francesco, Udine

Giuseppe Stampone, one of the most interesting Italian artists of his generation, will be the protagonist of RAVE East Village Artist Residency 2018. Now in its eighth year, this artistic project once again hosts a leading international artist in the countryside of Friuli during the summer months. Artists are invited to undertake their own research in a context which offers a different perspective on our ways of co-existing, in an attempt to overcome our anthropocentric filters.

Sunday 13th of May at 3pm will be the first opportunity to meet the artist in the Chiesa di San Francesco in Udine. The meeting will be held as part of the 14th festival vicino/lontano – Premio Terzani with Stampone participating in the discussion titled: Drawing as a practice of resistance: New perspectives to (re)consider contemporary geography. He is accompanied by Tiziana Pers, artist and director of rave, and Daniele Capra, journalist and curator.

The event will investigate the contemporary possibilities for art to intersect with reality, shining a light onto the shadows of our time and offering new perspectives and areas for intervention.

RAVE seeks to reconsider the role and responsibility of contemporary art towards animal otherness, as well as indicating the need to reconsider our position in the light of a bio-centric, anti-speciesist perspective. It also offers an experience in which all the participants, artists, philosophers, critics, activists, architects and poets, get to share time and space together with animals that have been saved from slaughter, and share food, which is always vegan in respect for all sentient beings. The magnificent historic setting of Soleschiano, near Manzano in Udine, hosts the encounter between human and non-human animals, bringing together individual sensibilities and interdisciplinary discussions. It combines the research process of the artist and the gaze of that which is the other in the most absolute terms, bringing to life a plurality of original and experimental visions.

Rave is a participative project created by Isabella and Tiziana Pers with Giovanni Marta, made possible thanks to the support of the Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, and that of its main partner Vulcano contemporary production unit, with the collaboration of Trieste Contemporanea, Università di Udine, Oipa, Musiz Foundation and Gallinae in Fabula.

Giuseppe Stampone, (born in Cluses, France 1974) lives and works in Rome and Brussels.

His research brings together the use of new media and didactic projects based on global themes such as migration, water resources, wars and the undermining of ecosystems caused by human intervention. The distinctive feature of his most recent artistic production is the choice of re-interpreting traditional painting techniques using a Bic biro, an everyday object that allows the artist to take the image from the realm of media and bring it back to the hand of the maker.

The artist acts by using a synergy of artistic languages associated with teaching and aimed at the social sphere, working between material and immaterial reality. He creates neo-dimensional levels in which the artwork can expand its power of communication by introducing everyday habits to change social relationships. Stampone recreates images of our time, he collects them and subtracts them for the flow of the web, giving them new meaning in relation to other visions that belong to the history of art (and by extension that of mankind) through the use of perspective.

Stampone’s artistic research, just like that of RAVE, dives deep into everyday reality, into the radical nature of existence itself. His work is developed through a series of multi-disciplinary projects that often encompass a necessary artistic, didactic and social dimension.

This is the case with Global Education, a touring project that has travelled across 39 locations, including MAXXI in Rome and GAMeC in Bergamo.

Stampone is also the founder of Progetto Solstizio (www.solstizio.org ) created in collaboration with the European Union and developed in different countries across the world. He works with different universities, including the Accademia di Belle Arti in Urbino, IULM in Milan, the Università Federico II in Naples and McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology in Toronto.

Stampone’s work has been exhibited at international art Biennials and Museums including: Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, South Korea (2017); Oostende Triennial, Belgium (2017); 56th Venice Biennale (2015); 11th Havana Biennial (2012); Liverpool Biennial (2010); 14th  and 15th  Quadriennale di Roma (2004 – 2008); Kunsthalle City Museum in Gwangiu (2010); American Academy in Rome (2008 – 2013 – 2014 – 2015); MAXXI – Museo Nazionale d’Arte del 21° secolo, Rome (2014); Palazzo Reale, Milan (2014); Museo Gamec, Bergamo (2010 – 2011 – 2014); Museo Macro, Rome (2010 – 2011). In 2013 Stampone was selected for the artist residence at the Young Eun Museum of Contemporary Art (YMCA), Gwangju, Korea.  Stampone is associate member of the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in New York and of The American Academy in Rome. His work is represented by the Galleria Prometeo in Milan-Lucca and the Galleria MLF in Brussels.
